Programme 2018: 16th & 17th March

St. Patrick's Festival 2018 will be the 5th edition of this annual celebration of Irish arts & culture. To celebrate, Literature is featured for the first time on the programme and  the Festival will take place at Splendor as well as the larger Uilenburger Sjoel, just a few minutes up the street from Splendor.

Tickets are sold via Splendor. Family and Kids passes are available for those attending multiple events.

Music and banter with David Munnelly

Get your St. Patrick’s weekend off to a “gezellig” start with fantastic accordion player David Munnelly with music, songs and no doubt a few stories all in the cosy Splendor bar.

David comes from County Mayo in Ireland, and now lives in The Netherlands. He  is widely regarded as one of the most influential Irish accordion players of his generation: he has played with legendary Irish bands De Dannan and The Chieftains, and for 15 years fronted The David Munnelly Band.

An evening of words and music with John Banville

Booker prizewinning Irish author John Banville, will be in conversation about his new book, Mrs. Osmond, and how music influences his writing. In a beautiful evening of words and music, hear the music that inspires John's writing, played by musicians including Irish violinist  Gwendolyn Masin, Dutch violinist Emmy Storms and Dutch cellist Johan van Iersel, solo cello Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Irish viola player Martin Moriarty and Robert Kulek, piano.

Irish Dancing workshop for all the family (4+ years)

Children (aged 4+) and their (grand)parents can try out Irish Céilí (group) dancing, in a fun setting where everyone gets to learn some new steps. Led by Catherine Redmond of the Redmond School of Irish Dancing, Holland. No previous Irish dancing experience is required.

The youngest musicians (ages 4-10) have an opportunity to get a taste of making music with an Irish theme and is led by Splendor Kids own music teacher, Iris Oltheten. Using Irish music as inspiration, Iris will guide the children to discover and explore the experience and fun of making music in a group setting. No previous musical experience is required.

Animation workshop with Rory Conway

Shapeshifters is a fun learning workshop for all ages, from 6 years old and up, where participants can discover in a step-by-step demonstration how to use simple shapes to create complex characters and learn about making animation movies.

 

Participants will be guided by the talented visual concept artist Rory Conway, from the Irish animation studio Cartoon Saloon, who will share the secrets of how to create characters from the Academy Award® nominated movies Song of the Sea, and The Secret of Kells.

The young talents that make up Four of a Kind can pull off some of the most powerful, energetic and danceable jigs and reels one is likely to come across outside of Ireland. They’ll be rounding off the evening with Irish music with a modern twist. You can tap your foot to the music or join in a late night céilí dancing session led by Renske Burghout.
